The Eric Jackson Podcast: Ep. 25 - REDEF's Jason Hirschhorn On How Media Is Being Redefined

Eric caught up with REDEF's founder, CEO and Chief Curator Jason Hirschhorn to talk about all the wrenching changes that are going on in the media world these days with the breakdown of the cable bundle, the rise of OTT, which media companies are winning & losing, Bill Simmons, Howard Stern, how he built such an enormous Rolodex, and what he's learned in the last few weeks since quad heart surgery.

Oh Yes, He’s The Great Connector: Jason Hirschhorn’s Expertly Curated World

If you've never heard of Jason Hirschhorn-and it's unlikely that you have, unless you're deep into the disruptive clash of content and technology-you've probably heard of some of the people who hang on his every word. At the very least, you know the companies that Hirschhorn's acolytes run and their vast influence over how we live our lives and navigate the popular culture.

Brian Grazer Explains To Oprah Why He Reads REDEF Every Morning

Brian Grazer is one of the most successful men in Hollywood's history. He's the producer behind movie classics like Splash, Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind as well as the recent television smash hit Empire. Combined, his work has been nominated for 43 Oscars® and 149 Emmys®. Yet, no matter what project he's working on or where his work takes him, Brian follows the same morning ritual he's had for the last 20 years. Each morning, Brian wakes up at 6 and drinks two glasses of water. Next, he drinks his coffee while eating apples and bananas. Then, Brian browses the Internet. "I read stories," he says. "All the things that are happening on the planet from, you know, important news sources. ... That gets me excited. It gets me wound up and gets me asking questions of myself." Watch as Brian explains what questions he begins to ask. Plus, hear what he has to say about the lesson that's taken him longest to learn.

MediaREDEF should have a leaderboard

I find myself talking about MediaREDEF a lot lately. I mentioned it in my newsletter yesterday, and in a wave of private conversations in the last few weeks. It usually comes up when someone is bitching that there's no good tech journalism anymore. "Sure there is," I say. "I get more than I can read everyday from Jason Hirschhorn."

REDEF's Jason Hirschhorn Talks to CNN's Brian Stelter at The Paley Center for Media

On November 11th, 2014, REDEF CEO and Chief Curator Jason Hirschhorn talked to CNN's Brian Stelter about REDEF's growth and the future of media and technology. The Paley Media Council is an exclusive, invitation-only membership community for entertainment, media, and technology industry executives and provides an independent forum for top industry leaders to explore the evolving ways in which we create, consume, and connect through media and technology.

Media titans back Hirschhorn newsletter

Entrepreneur Jason Hirschhorn has raised $2.25 million in debt financing from a host of media industry titans to expand his free daily media and tech e-mail newsletter into a subscription model. The newsletter, Media ReDEF (short for "redefined"), aggregates non-breaking, analytical content about all manner of media and technology, and includes tweets, videos and text links to controversial topics.

The Rise And Rise Of Curated Email Newsletters

One of the more intriguing trends I've noted recently, particularly in the barrage of "email isn't dead" articles in the more mainstream press, is the emergence of the curated newsletter. It makes sense: every day we're inundated with interesting articles via social media, so there's a great appeal in having someone sift through the most interesting stuff and present a digest every day or week.

Jason Hirschhorn on Sling, MySpace & Taking REDEF From Hobby To Company

Nearly two decades into when many started using email, most of us still have our favorite newsletter and valuable info we get via the inbox. Jason Hirschhorn, who put MTV into the Internet age and later helped run Sling Media and MySpace, took a hobby and turned into a business around his great curated newsletter of interesting articles, video and stuff he puts together every day.

MediaREDEF expands its original content offerings with a depressing take on online video

But today we see something completely different from REDEF — original content. The brand has published a pseudonymously-written article called, “A REDEF ORIGINAL: If Video is Booming, Why are Revenues Evaporating?” Fittingly, it’s as excellent a read as something REDEF would normally curate, breaking down the video and film landscape in stark terms almost anyone can understand.

SAI Reading Guide: Media Mogul Email

News Corp. COO Peter Chernin reads it. So does NBC boss Ben Silverman. And so do hundreds of other media and tech execs and insiders. It's Sling Media Entertainment boss Jason Hirschhorn's Media ReDEFined email newsletter, and it's both simple and addictive: Every day Jason, a Web 1.0 vet who used to run MTV's digital operation, uses NewsGator to clip dozens of articles he finds interesting, then passes them along via Feedburner.

The Landscape of Digital Media in 2017 — A Curated Reading List for Founders and Investors

Digital media has emerged over the last decade with an explosion of companies, platforms, investments and most importantly incredible global storytelling. While almost anyone, anywhere can launch a digital media company like the early days of the printing press, over the last three years a set of early winners have emerged with quick digital media consolidation happening under large media conglomerates around the world.
