QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
We wanted to start working with people and not have people tell us who we should be working with based on what the financial turnout was going to be, or what the streaming numbers would end up being, or what the radio plays would end up being. It was: 'Let's make art that we're passionate about,' because eventually it's going to translate.

Rock and roll laundry followup: Two months ago, LAURA SNAPES of the GUARDIAN began one 2018's most fascinating rock TWITTER threads with an open request for a story on how touring bands deal with their laundry. The NEW YORK TIMES' THOMAS ROGERS has now come through, sort of, with this sparklingly clean account of how bands with arena-size budgets do it. Pro tip: Don't get your nose too close to SLIPKNOT's coveralls. Also, be careful when you're outsourcing JANET JACKSON's dry cleaning. We're still waiting for a wrinkle-free (or, more likely, not) account of how it works for bands on the $10 or $20 per diem level... (Potential name for a rock laundry magazine: SPIN CYCLE. You are free to steal this)... Trumpeter and composer TERENCE BLANCHARD, veteran of 40-plus films over three decades, had never been nominated for an OSCAR until Tuesday, which is not the single most embarrassing thing the MOTION PICTURE ACADEMY needs to atone for, but embarrassing nonetheless. His score for BLACKKKLANSMAN is up against NICHOLAS BRITELL (IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK), LUDWIG GÖRANSSON (BLACK PANTHER), ALEXANDRE DESPLAT (ISLE OF DOGS) and MARC SHAIMAN (MARY POPPINS RETURNS). The winner for BEST ORIGINAL SONG will be "SHALLOW" or my name is BOB LEFSETZ. (All due respect to the KENDRICK LAMAR/SZA panther jam "ALL THE STARS" and DAVID RAWLINGS & GILLIAN WELCH's scruggsy "WHEN A COWBOY TRADES HIS SPURS FOR WINGS")... Reminder: This is the first major contract signing RCA announced after the airing of SURVIVING R. KELLY. The artist in question has been released from French custody while a rape investigation continues... You will be watching THE MASKED SINGER tonight on FOX. I know this because I, too, will be watching and I most definitely was not planning on this when 2019 began. #TeamLion... Boogaloo all you old dudes... A nearly unhittable cutter wasn't the only weapon in NEW YORK YANKEES relief pitcher MARIANO RIVERA's arsenal during his Hall of Fame career. There was also an intimidating walk-on song, METALLICA's "ENTER SANDMAN," which soundtracked every trip Rivera took to the YANKEE STADIUM mound from 1999 to 2013. But on Tuesday, when he became the first player unanimously voted into the Hall of Fame, Rivera told MLB NETWORK he's never been to a Metallica show and "as a Christian, with all due respect to Metallica, I don’t listen to that kind of music." Except for maybe that one time. His one-time teammate and fellow Hall of Famer RANDY JOHNSON remains the most metal baseball player ever... RIP MAXINE BROWN RUSSELL, EDWIN BIRDSONG and KAYE BALLARD.

Spotify's New Mute Feature Is a Patronizing Misstep

On Monday (Jan. 21) tech site Thurrot reported that Spotify has begun rolling out a block feature, one which allows users to block artists from their view of the platform. When a Spotify user blocks an artist, they’ll no longer see them in curated playlists like Discover Weekly or even charts, and they’ll have to actively unblock the artist to hear their music again.

Making Free Pay

Although the free skew of the web is being rebalanced, most consumers still will not pay. This means ad-supported strategies are going to play a growing role in the digital economy. But set against the backdrop of growing consumer privacy concerns, we will see data become a new battle ground.
