Money for Something: Debating the Music Modernization Act
One massive bill, two legislative bodies to pass, ten thousand opinions. Can music and tech companies convince Washington to improve the way musicians and composers are paid? And is that in fact what they're doing?

This legislation is critical to ensuring songwriters have a pathway to fair compensation so they can sustain their livelihoods and create the next great songs.

A Better Way to Protect Recording Artists

I’ve proposed the ACCESS to Recordings Act, which would give artists new rights in two ways. This is part of my long standing view that we need a strong, but balanced, copyright system that not only protects artists and creators, but also fosters innovation, freedom of expression and education. Artists deserve to be compensated for their work, but we shouldn’t lock up ideas for decades after the creator has passed away.

As Music Modernization Act Enters Senate, Anti-Copyright Activists Come Out Of The Woodwork

It's fair enough to debate the legislation formerly known as the CLASSICS Act. But some of this criticism is factually inaccurate, most of it is hysterical, and all of it is coming from Make-The-Internet-Great-Again die-hards who haven't gotten over the Supreme Court's ruling that held the post-Napster file-sharing service could face liability for copyright infringement.

Beware Songwriters: The Music Modernization Act Sets the Stage for a Brutal Songwriter/publisher Tug of War

The stage is set for a brutal tug-of-war over tens of millions of dollars between individual songwriters and their publishers. H.R. 4706, also known as the Music Modernization Act, provides many benefits and updates to the arcane royalty structure of US copyright law. However, there are some provisions concerning unclaimed and unmatched monies which, as currently drafted, could lead to a myriad of problems for creators.

Marc Ribot: The Red Ink Beneath Streaming’s “New Dawn”

The Music Modernization Act will hopefully expand collection and distribution of songwriter royalties for interactive streaming. But even at the most optimistic outcome, streaming is simply not viable for the majority of indie recording musicians and labels. And it never will be viable, as long as internet giants like Google/YouTube can profit from copyright infringement with impunity.
